Course Objective
This course aims to examine the concept of human rights and its relationship with democratic values in the light of the fundamental sources of Islam. It seeks to enable students to understand the significance Islam places on justice, equality, freedom, and human dignity; to compare these principles with modern human rights documents; and to analyze the similarities and differences between democratic systems and the Islamic perspective.
Brief Content of the Course
Theological and legal foundations of human rights in Islam; the concepts of justice, equality, freedom, and responsibility in the Qur’an and the Sunnah; fundamental rights and freedoms in Islamic law; modern human rights documents (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam, etc.); the concept of democracy, principles of democratic governance, and Islamic models of governance; contemporary debates on the relationship between human rights and democracy.
