Course Objective

The aim of this course is to evaluate the historical development of science and the philosophical foundations of scientific thought from a sociological perspective. The History and Philosophy of Science course aims to provide students with an understanding of the birth, development, methods, social functions, and ethical dimensions of science. By examining the historical transformations of science from antiquity to the present, students will learn how science has been defined in different periods and how forms of knowledge production are shaped by social conditions. The course also aims to analyze how scientific knowledge is produced and legitimized within cultural, political, and economic contexts. In the philosophical dimension, students will understand fundamental approaches such as positivism, empiricism, rationalism, critical theory, Kuhn's paradigm, Popper's principle of falsifiability, and Feyerabend's critique of science, learning to approach the changing nature of scientific knowledge from a critical perspective.
