Course Objective
The course aims to teach to the students the basics of followings: Heat transfer mechanisms. Steady and transient heat conduction in different geometries. Forced and natural convection and heat transfer correlations. Fundamentals of thermal radiation. Heat exchangers.
Brief Content of the Course
Heat transfer mechanisms: Conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer. The general heat conduction equation. Steady one-dimensional heat conduction. Thermal resistance networks. Steady heat conduction in cylinders and spheres. Critical thickness of insulation. Heat transfer from finned surfaces. Two dimensional heat conduction. Transient heat conduction in lumped systems. Numerical Methods. Fundamentals of convection. The velocity and thermal boundary layers. Dimensionless numbers and similarity. Forced convection in external and internal flows. Natural Convection. Fundamentals of thermal radiation. Heat exchangers.
