Course Objective
The aim of this course is to analyze rural social structures, relations, and transformation processes from a sociological perspective. It seeks to provide an understanding of the economic, cultural, and social changes experienced by rural areas in the transition from agrarian to industrial and information societies. The course also aims to develop a critical perspective on rural-urban relations, migration, rural development policies, and gender roles in rural contexts.
Brief Content of the Course
This course covers the basic concepts and theoretical approaches of rural sociology; the relationship between village and social structure; the transformation of the agricultural economy and modernization processes; education and rural development; the experience of Village Institutes in Turkey; rural-to-urban and urban-to-rural migration and their social impacts; rural women and gender roles; peasant movements and forms of resistance; agriculture, ecology, and sustainable rural development. Turkish cases are examined and discussed in comparison with global examples of rural sociology.
