Course Objective
The concept of disability is often described as a negative connotation for both society and individuals. Historically, the concept of disability has been perceived differently in Eastern and Western societies, leaving those with disabilities, who constitute a specific segment of society, inactive. In modern societies, social development, prosperity, and progress will only be possible by integrating all segments of society into the production of goods and services as a dynamic structure. Therefore, it will be a priority to evaluate the social status and rehabilitation of people with disabilities in terms of their physical, psychological, social, and environmental aspects, thus achieving a dynamic structure. Furthermore, it will be crucial to equip individuals with disabilities with the ability to assess their status in light of national and international developments. In light of these findings, we will develop the ability to identify and develop policies related to disability and people with disabilities in Turkey. Furthermore, we will conduct meetings with our university's Disability Unit coordinator and faculty units to monitor the effective learning of students with disabilities in our department. We will also collaborate with relevant non-governmental organizations in Niğde to provide experience and knowledge to students who choose this course.
Brief Content of the Course
Definitions of disability, the historical process of the concept, and policies, institutions, and practices addressing disabilities in Turkey. Sociologists argue that ensuring the sustainability of a society is only possible through the intellectual and practical unity of the individuals who constitute it, working together towards the same goal within the social structure. The most significant factor hindering this unity is the presence of individuals with disabilities in society. It is essential to raise this awareness and direct each individual toward social goals, taking into account their mental, emotional, cognitive, and physical conditions, and to utilize sociology in this endeavor.
